Install Windows 7 on any netbook (Asus Eee PC 900)!

This tutorial will show you how to install Microsoft Windows 7 on the Asus Eee PC 900. Except for the last part (configuring boot devices), this tutorial works for every other netbook out there! Just follow the instructions to create your bootable Windows 7 USB thumbdrive, plug it into your netbook and start!

If the image doesn’t satisfy you, see this video proof:

(In this video, I am running Build 6956, although the startup animation is not the correct one. I guess that the graphics card is not good enough to display the 3D animation. This way of installing Windows 7 will work with any version of Windows 7)

What do I need?

  • DVD or Image file of Windows 7/Windows Vista
  • 4 GB USB thumbdrive (Usually NOT MORE THAN 4GB! Booting from USB flash devices is often not supported on devices bigger than 4GB, but with some newer netbook, it still works. Smaller USB sticks won’t work either since W7 won’t fit on them!)
  • Computer with DVD drive or Image Mounting tool or Image Extracting tool
  • Asus Eee PC (or any other netbook)
  • Approx. 3h of time

Steps covered in this tutorial

  • Create a bootable USB thumbdrive
  • Copy Windows 7 to the thumbdrive
  • Prepare the Eee PC to boot from USB
  • Install Windows 7
  • Install necessary drivers
  • Try to get Aero running

How can I install Windows 7 on my netbook?

Create a bootable USB thumbdrive

First of all, if you haven’t got an external DVD drive, you will need a few tricks to install any Operating System on the Asus Eee PC since it has no CD drive.

But luckily the mainboard is quite cool and supports booting from USB devices, such as an USB thumbdrive. For Windows 7 Build 6956, you need at least 2.3 GB memory, so rather go for a 4 GB stick. Rumors that USB booting supports only 2 GB are not true!!

Plug the USB thumbdrive into another computer and download the following tool package:

Download USB_PREP8, PeToUSB, Bootsect.exe

Extract all the files inside and navigate to the usb_prep8 folder. Inside, double-click the executable batch file called usb_prep8.cmd. You will see a screen like this:

Press any key to contine, after a few seconds it will show you this window:

Make sure the options “Enable Disk Format”, “Quick Format” and “Enable LBA (FAT16X)” are checked and the correct USB drive is selected in the dropdown list above. This formatting process will erase all data on your USB thumbdrive! Save all files you need before formatting it! Then click start, click OK and click YES in the window asking you whether you really want to erase all files. After a few seconds, the stick should be formatted. Now close the PeToUSB window and the remaining console window.

The thumbdrive is formatted in a way that supports booting now, but the boot record is still not correct. In order to fix that, you have to use the other tool you extracted, called bootsect.

Press Start, Run and enter “cmd” (without the quotation marks), then press enter.

In the console window showing up, navigate to the path you extracted the bootsect folder to. You can use the “cd” command (change directory) and enter the name of the next folder afterwards (e.g. “cd Desktop”) to access the folder, or enter “cd ..” to move one folder back. If you enter only the first part of the folder name, e.g. “des” and then press TAB, it will auto-complete it to “Desktop”. This way you have to navigate into the bootsect folder.

Inside, enter “BootSect.exe /nt60 I:” and press enter to prepare the boot sector. Replace “I:” with the drive letter of your USB thumbdrive! The option “/nt60″ prepares the thumbdrive for use with Windows Vista and Windows 7, if you want to install XP choose “/nt52″.

After pressing enter you should see something like this:

Target volumes will be updated with BOOTMGR compatible bootcode.

I: (\\?\Volume{789ae78e-c3da-11dd-b1a9-000e2e405744})

Successfully updated FAT filesystem bootcode.

Bootcode was successfully updated on all targeted volumes.

Now your thumbdrive is ready to be used as boot drive!

Put Windows 7 on your bootable thumbdrive

Now you have to move all the files required for installation to the USB thumbdrive you prepared. Now you have 3 choices:

  1. Windows 7 is on a DVD:
Just put the DVD into your DVD drive, open the Windows Explorer, rightclick the drive and select “Explore”. Now use CTRL + A to mark all files on the DVD, press CTRL + C to copy them, go to your thumbdrive and press CTRL + V to paste them. It will take a few minutes to copy all the stuff.
  2. Windows 7 is an image file (*.iso, *.mdf, …)
You can mount the image using a tool such as Daemon Tools to create a virtual DVD drive which tells Windows that the Windows 7 DVD is inserted although it isn’t ;-)
When the image is mounted, you can follow the instructions of 1.
  3. Windows 7 is an image file and I don’t want to mount it:
You can use any of the various extracting tools like WinRAR or MagicISO to extract the image file just like a normal ZIP or RAR archive and copy all the files to the thumbdrive. If you chose MagicISO, rightclick in one of the file explorers shown on the top and select “Extract”.

Whatever you do, just make sure that ALL the files from the DVD/Image are on the thumbdrive afterwards!

Prepare the Asus Eee PC to boot from USB devices

Now plug in the prepared USB thumbdrive into your Asus’ USB port. Start the laptop and enter the BIOS setup by pressing F2 immediately after the grey Asus Eee PC screen showed up. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the Boot tab.

Now select “Boot Device Priority” and press enter. Make sure the first boot device is “Removable Dev.”! After that, press escape to go back, navigate to the “Exit” tab and choose “Save changes and Exit”. After saving the BIOS settings, the grey screen will show up again. Now press Escape, it will bring you to a screen where you can select the boot device:

Select “USB” and press enter. You will have a black screen for about 5 seconds, then Windows 7 setup will load!

Follow the steps of the installation until it is done! There shouldn’t be any issus, but if there are, please feel free to comment! After the installation, which will take around 2 hours I guess, the Eee PC with Windows 7 is almost ready for use!

Installing necessary drivers

Surprisingly, Windows 7 already includes WLAN and Audio drivers, so you can surf the internet and play music right from the beginning on.

Video drivers are not supplied. Without them, Windows 7 can only display a resolution of 800×600 and can’t use any of the special stuff, so you should get them. Sadly, Intel doesn’t supply and for Windows 7 yet, and the normal Asus Driver disk doesn’t even contain some for Windows Vista. You can download the latest Intel GMA 915 drivers here: Intel Download Center.

You have to run them in Compability Mode for Windows Vista in order for them to work! Rightclick the executable, select “Properties”, “Compability” and tick “Run this program in compability for: Windows Vista”. Then the installation should work.

You can do the same trick with all other driver supplied by Asus, but acutally you don’t need to do it. I just kept the drivers Windows 7 installed for me.

Aero on the Asus Eee PC

Even with the new Intel Graphics Drivers, Aero isn’t running! I didn’t find a way to get it started yet, even all the registry hacks suggested didn’t help. Either they work for Vista only and not for Windows 7, or the GMA 915 is too worse even to try it out. If you find a way for it to work, please tell me!!

i’m not sure but this may work:
    1. copy all the files inside the disk image to your USB HDD

    3. boot from floppy and choose the hdd as isntall path.

the hdd hasnt got the right boot sector configuration (the PeToUSB tool writes the correct ones on your thumbdrive) so that when booting from it the bios cant find the right place to start.
perhaps there’s a way to change the boot sectors of an external hdd, not sure about that, but google is your friend ;-)

You can remove components with vlite but hotfix integration and the unattended part will mess up the setup. For Windows 7 you’ll have to work on “Windows 7 Ultimate”. Trying another edition will mess the setup as well.
I created a new ISO which is just 1GB. I’m installing it on a VM just to make sure it will fit on the 4GB SSD. During the HDD setup it said that it needs at least a 1.855GB partition for installation. Let’s see how much space it’s really gonna take ;)

I think what he wants is to fit Windows 7 on the internal 4GB SSD of his Eee PC so that the other, 8 or 16GB SSD is free for all the other data.
And 8GB sticks cause problems, I read somewhere that booting from USB flash memory supports only up to 2GB so I was surprised that my 4GB stick worked.

I’m currently installing the Beta 1 (Build 7000), it’s at “Completing installation…” so give me 30 more minutes ;-)

Thanks for your feedback, it’s good to know that the LAN and WLAN drivers for the 1000H are not included in Windows 7. For my Eee PC 900, everything is included and works fine, but this may help you:
Since Vista drivers are not workign, try the XP ones. Probably an Asus Driver CD was shipped with your Netbook, get these drivers on your Eee PC (USB thumbdrive) and try to run them in Compability Mode (rightclick the driver file, choose properties, go to compability tab) for Windows XP SP2. This worked for me with an earlier build of Windows 7.

If it still doesn’t work with that, come back and we will try another way!

1.) You are going to need a minimum of a 16 Gb SSD to do the install, 32Gb replacement SSDs for a eee 900A are available online for ca. U.S. $79, can’t afford not to buy one/upgrade if you’re into eee hacking…
2.) My installation was on a 32Gb SSD that was running dual boot XP Home and Ubuntu 8.04 on 16 Gb partitions.
3.) If you are installing on a eee that has XP Home installed, you need not go through the rigamarole above, just get the Windows version of the Unetbootin utility and blow the Windows 7 ISO image onto a 4Gb USB drive or USB SD card reader. You can start the setup.exe program on the ISO image on the drive.
4.) Be aware that if you have a dual boot XP Home/any Linux flavor system, the Windows 7 install will whack the GRUB boot loader and you will need to reinstall it. HowTo for that found here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/reinstall-ubuntu-grub-bootloader-after-windows-wipes-it-out/

Just did the install yesterday, everything pretty much works in Windows 7, but it behaves a bit bizarrely, seems like most Windows 7 functions/utilities run quite snappily, but non-Windows software like Firefox or Open Office intermittently slow down tremendously.

    1. Please use the Shrink Windows 7 Tutorial to make your Windows 7 smaller, so it will even fit to your 4GB SSD:

    2. See 1.
    3. No you can’t, i tried that, you can mount the ISO at XP and start the installation, but as soon as it finished copying the files, it will restart, extract them and afterwards, when it tries to find drivers, have an error saying that the disc was not found. Thus it’s not working as easy as this.
    4. That’s true, but the link you provided fixes it.

For me, the 3rd party applications run fine, I use Google Chrome and it is working perfectly. Firefox also works good, but not as fast as Chrome.

8GB USB sticks often cause errors, I think they don’t support booting from (at least I read that somewhere). But it is possible to use external HDDs, and they’re a lot bigger, so I think it should be possible.
Try a smaller one (4GB) and tell me whether it helps!

I want to take an Asus EEE PC 900A w/ a 4GB SSD & Linux O/S and swap out the 4GB SSD for a 64GB Runcore SSD and load Windows XP Pro on it. I want to load XP & other Windows applications from an external DVD drive, not a thumb drive.

    Questions…
Can I plug in any old external USB DVD drive and have it recognized w/o the O/S installed? In other words, after I replace the SSD, the new SSD will be blank w/o the Linux or XP O/S. So, will the BIOS recognize the DVD drive? Do I need to configure the settings? And more importantly, is the BIOS the same for Linux as it is for Windows or do I need to install a new BIOS for the XP O/S?

    Anyone? Please advise. Thanks.

    @c1asia

The Eee PC 900 has a 4GB SSD and a 12GB or 16GB SSD. The 4GB SSD is soldered to the motherboard and cannot be removed. The larger SSD can be removed for faster, larger capacity SSD drives since it is mini PCIe.

The Eee PC 900 will recognize a USB DVD drive. I used one for my installation, and both drives had all partitions deleted (No boot sector, MBR, etc.)

The BIOS is the same regardless of the OS. With the EeePC900, you will need to make some changes in the BIOS. You will need to change the boot priority to boot from the USB DVD drive. If it is plugged in then it should show up as an option to select, otherwise use the Removeable Device. You will also need to change the OS Installation from “Finished” to “Start”. From then on just follow Basti’s walkthrough!

I was able to format the 30gb ssd to ntfs, but W7 will not allow me to install on that partition for some reason, saying it cannot create a partition.

OK, so I figured it out. While in Ubuntu, you need to go to cfdisk and change the primary drive (for me it was sda, 8GB) type to NTFS (code 07) so the W7 install program will see the drive. Once you make that change you shut down the computer and boot from the thumb drive as described above and the install works.

Just attempted this on my Eee 1000H (160Gb HDD), unfortunately I don’t have a 4Gb stick so at first I tried using a 4Gb partition on my external HDD, PeToUSB doesn’t recognise it. Then tried it using a 8Gb stick, PeToUSB still didn’t recognise it. So then I partitioned my 8Gb into two 4Gb partitions, PeToUSB could see it but when running its process it’d always come up with an error message. So I was resorted to using vLite (making sure to steer clear of the Integration and Unattened sections)and putting the files on my 2Gb stick. Now I can boot into the Windows installation and it’ll start to install itself, then it’ll do a restart but before it goes back to installing I have to change the boot sequence back to have HDD first otherwise the installation process just starts from the beginning. Anyway, once I’ve come back into the installation it’ll sit there for a bit supposedly doing the final ‘Completing installation’ part when a box appears saying something along the lines of that it can’t configure for the hardware. And basically I’m a bit stumped on this now. Have had to go back to Ubuntu, but would like to get Windows 7 at some point.

This is weird. Which netbook do you have? When it’s the Eee PC 700, perhaps the 600MHz Celeron is REALLY to slow for W7.
I’ve also got the thing with the C:\ drive, when I double-click it, nothing happens for a while, but after 10 sec or so I can see the contents… but sometimes everything stays blank. In addition, my W7 can only recognize the 16GB SSD, it shows only 1 partition. When booting XP (installed on the 4GB SSD), I can see and access both partitions.

    @stereodata:
Apparently, nobody had this error. I didn’t have it as well when installing XP from the thumbdrive, so perhaps the Eee PC is immune against it :P

    @Apocrypha:
PeToUSB doesn’t work with HDDs, but perhaps you can find another tool somewhere in the internet. And USB sticks bigger than 4GB can’t be bootable because the BIOS won’t recognize them or something, so PeToUSB won’t let you try to make them bootable.

Videos on W7 with the Eee PC seems to be a general problem. HD Video playback makes the computer freeze, the WinSAT tool freezes at “Media Foundation Playback Assessment v1.0.0.0″ which also sounds like video, and now you tell me that even the Skype video chat lets it crash. Thanks for the guide on installing Windows 7 on an Asus PC EEE 900.
I previously installed Ubuntu EEE and had lots of issues getting it to work properly. I followed your steps and Windows 7 works like a dream for me.

I noticed a few things though that I did differently and the install still worked.

    1. I first tried to use USB_PREP8 and PeToUSB on a SanDisk Cruzer 8Gb USB memory and got an error message.
    2. I instead just used the regular Format option in Windows Vista with FAT32, and then ran bootsect.exe with the /nt60 option as your instructions.
    3. I copied all the files from the Windows 7 iso file, installed it on my Asus netbook without any problems, usb started up just fine too.
    4. Once everything was done I installed the recommended updates from Windows Update, which included new Intel GM915/910 drivers. All seems to work just fine for me now.

    Thanks for an awesome guide!

I don’t think so. Creating a new OS for just one type of computer isn’t very good, consider all the compability problems that may occur with existing software and drivers.
In my opinion they should rather scale down Window’s hunger for bigger hardware. Vista needs so much computing power for doing nothing that could be used in programs or games. Windows 7 is better, but still quite power-consuming.

oh, that are interesting questions. first of all, make sure that your USB stick is supported by PeToUSB. I couldn’t get it working with sticks bigger than 4GB, but some guys did (see comments above). then just follow the instructions and create a bootable usb stick. plug it into your Eee PC and insert the SD card (but you need more than 4GB, Windows 7 needs around 9GB), boot from it, and see whether you can select the SD card as target device (should be working, other guys managed to do it).
Once it’s installed on it, booting should work as well. Otherwise google it.

First of all, delete ALL partitions. You’ve still got the Asus Backup stuff there. I have no idea how to do this in Windows 7, but it should be similar to Windows Vista and you can google for it.
When you deleted all partitions, decide whether you want to create 1 or 2 partitions, I would go for 1 if possible. Create a new one and format it using NTFS (quick).

    For Eee PC 900.
To make the installation complete with all devices working, leave the current OS installed (XP Home edition) you can then use either DVD/CD USB drive, Flash drive or external HD, with WIndows 7 installation software, run setup, make sure your internet connection is still attached with the current OS to download the updates, choose next the new install and not the update option, after the installation is complete install the ECap software to use your camera (But first make sure it is enabled in the BIOS settings).

By using this option you do not have to contend with attempting to configure the system to see the SSD. Also it will perform better if the SSD in upgraded to a 32gb, also it performs better if you increase the memory to 2gb, then you can run Office 2007 and other applications.

    @Zaino:
How did you “copy” the DVD to your HDD? If you just used the Copy & Paste from Windows Explorer, some hidden files may be missing and thus causing the installation problem.
You may try to create an image from your DVD (ImgBurn can do this) and then follow step 2 instead of step 1 under “Put Windows 7 on your bootable thumbdrive”. This way you make sure than every file is really copied.

Just installed Windows 7 Ultimate (from MSDN subscription) on my Asus EeePC 904HA following these instructions. I found out it has a Intel GMA 950 and the resolution was correct from the beginning (1024*600) and Aero is working fine.

I installed it with an USB drive. I first tried the new Microsoft tool (Microsoft Windows 7 USB DVD Download tool) to make a bootable usb drive but it did not work. Then I tried to make it with the software mentioned in the tutorial. At first the USB drive was not recognized but after running the program in Administrator mode it was.

    Installing went smooth without problems.

Thanks a lot for the instructions.

  171. Lennart Moltrecht (admin) Says:

Well, you don’t have enough space on your 701. As far as I know, it only has a 4GB SSD, and Windows 7 needs around 4GB for its files and another 2GB for temporary stuff and pagefiles.
Your error means “0×80070070. There is not enough space on the disk” ( http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vssmartdevicesvbcs/thread/05938131-d32a-4133-b761-df60f93a5eef ), which confirms my assumption. Then rather get a Windows 7 Starter version and not the Ultimate, some guy at the other post wrote that it is only 1.3GB and will thus fit onto the SSD without any problems.

  177. wayne Says:

Finally… i found solution. This is what i did for my asus eee pc 701

follow the instruction that Lennart Moltrecht (admin)but before you install select repair my computer at installation screen
On command prompt, go back to the letter that has the sources folder, mine was X:, just type X: or whatever yours was, and type setup /noreboot

    Code:

    X:
    setup /noreboot

    - Let the installation go until it would normally reboot, but since we used /noreboot, it won’t reboot, it will go back to the command prompt instead.

    - Manually reboot and press ESC when it starts to select the installation SD or USB stick again. In case you fail to press ESC, the installation won’t continue, because we removed all boot drives on step 2, just reboot and try again.

    [Now here is the catch]
    - On the installation, choose repair my computer.

    - When it asks for your Windows installation, choose Load Driver. Click OK on the message that appears.

    - Navigate to the Windows folder, right click, properties, advanced, check compress this folder, click OK on both screens, and then check the compress subfolders option and click OK again. Go do something else, because it will take a while.

    - Do the same for Program Files folder.

[The free space should go quite a bit, in my case from 750 MB to 1.6 GB.]

    - Now manually reboot again, you can enter setup and set the main SSD as the first boot drive.

    - Exit setup and let the installation continue.

    Advantages of this method:
    - No ghosting required
    - No additional media required
    - Pretty straightforward

    Disadvantages of this method:
    - A little slow
    - Might not work on machines with too much RAM

but your eee pc will crash if you compress the wrong file

    good luck!

Hi, i’d found a way to enable aero in windows 7 (Works from BETA to final version) ~:
The idea is to modify GMA950’s driver and install in my GMA900 eee pc 701 netbook. By this way, you can cheat in windows 7, and enable Aero Glass. But something I must to say is that I can’t guarantee on the stability.(cuz asus eee pc 701 and 900 is running intel GMA900 that the driver is not supported Aero either in windows 7 or vista)

    1. find out the hardware ID of your GMA900. (you can view this information in device manager)
    2. download a latest Windows 7 or vista driver for GMA950 (i945GM chipset) from anywhere you want. (it’s a good choice to download form intel’s website. down the .zip one, not the .exe)
    HERE’S THE LINK

    3. uncompress the driver.

    4. edit a file \Graphics\igdlh.inf, find out the section [Intel.Mfg], and find the hardware ID of 945GM, replace the ID to your GMA900’s.
    find this one:
    %iCLGD0% = i945GM0, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27A2
    change to
%iCLGD0% = i945GM0, PCI\(YOUR GMA900 HARDWARE ID THAT YOU FOUND IN THE DEVICE MANAGER)
    5. save this file, and install this modified driver, reboot your system.
    6. and then…enjoy the Aero Glass…

(PLEASE TELL ME IF I AM WRONG CUZ I’D JUST TRIED IT ON EEE PC 701 NOT 900)

    @David T:
You could try to install W7 on a SD card, but the performance will be very low (SD cards are really slow compared to the integrated SSD or even normal HDDs).
Instead, you may try to shrink your Windows 7 so that it will fit on the 4GB:

There is an option, it’s just well hidden! When you install W7, it will ask you on which partition to install it. Below, there is just one button to click saying “advanced” or something like that. Click it, and all the options you know from XP installation will be there like deleting, creating and formatting partitions.
