Shrink Windows 7 to fit on Asus Eee PC 4GB SDD or any netbook

This tutorial will show you how to shrink your copy of Windows 7 so that it will be as small as 3.8GB and will fit on the 4GB SDD of the Asus Eee PC 700 and 900!

Now follow the steps below to make your own customized version of Windows 7 for your Netbook. This is quite complicated compared to a normal installation of Windows 7, and perhaps there will be an easier way in the future, but until now, this is better than nothing, and you can have the other SDD for all the stuff you want to have on your netbook.

Thanks to Basti756 for this awesome tutorial! See the proof that it is working below:

Get Windows 7

You can download Windows 7 Beta 1 either from the official  Microsoft Windows 7 download site or via Torrent, which should be 100% legal since the official version has been released for public testing. Download torrent file.

Required software:

  • WAIK 1.1 (download)
Mount the image and install WAIK before installing vLite
  • vLite (download)
At the first start, vLite will tell you how to enable the WAIK stuff installed before
  • vLite Settings file (download)
Extract the *.ini file and copy it to your vLite root directory/presets
  • Imaging Software: i.e. Acronis True Image Echo Server 9.5 (download)
Link to trial version which fits your needs, you may also download it from your favorite warez/torrent site if you need a full version
  • Windows 7 (download)

Windows 7 Beta 1 (Build 7000) on Eee PC 900

Today I installed the newer version of Windows 7 on my Asus Eee PC 900 using the tutorial to install Windows 7 on netbooks using USB memory sticks. The installation was fine and went slightly faster than the installation of Build 6956, after around 1 hour I could see the desktop.

You can download Windows 7 Beta 1 either from the official Microsoft Windows 7 download site or via Torrent, which should be 100% legal since the official version has been released for public testing. Download torrent file.

I will test out whether I can get Aero running on this version, see if it’s more stable than the old release and stuff like that.

New functions/issues and changes to the previous version (Build 6956):

  • Graphics driver for “Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS” included, so full screen resolution (1024×600) now possible without driver installation
  • Keyboard function buttons (volume up, volume down, mute, …) still not working without installation of Asus ACPI
  • Even after installation of Asus ACPI drivers the buttons are not working… the volume up/down window shows up, but nothing happens, and a window pops up saying “Missing Audio Driver, disable Fn+F7,8,9. Please install Audio Driver” but the audio driver is installed.
  • Internet Explorer 8 has now a “InPrivate” mode like Google Chrome’s “Incognito Mode”
  • When trying to watch HD videos on Youtube with Internet Explorer 8/Flash Player 10 Windows completely freezes. Only restart helps
  • After this Youtube HD crash, the whole Windows 7 system is fucked. Automatic system restore took 10 minutes to fix it, then I could finally reboot. So HD videos can destroy your Windows installation? Interesting…
  • The Desktop Gadget Gallery is finally working! In Build 6956 nothing happened when you tried to access it.
  • Windows 7 doesn’t recognize the other SDD with Windows XP installed on it. The explorer just shows the Win7 SDD as C:\ and nothing else
  • When you click at the images in the task bar that replace the old image and text there, even tabs inside Internet Explorer are shown so you can go directly to the tab you want
  • Everything runs much faster and smoother than before. Now you can have multiple applications running in the same time without them crashing all the time.
  • Shutdown is still awful slow (takes around 3 minutes, that’s longer than starting up!)
  • Windows still crashes when trying to run the Windows Performance Assessment Tool (WinSAT), at “Running: Media Foundation Playback Assessment v1.0.0.0 ‘-input C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\winsat.wmv -nopmp”, thus you can’t get a rating for your computer and Aero won’t be able to run.
  • The built-in microphone is still not really working. It can hear something, but is soo silent, when you scream into it, the bar goes up only 0.5%. Something is wrong there.
  • When one tab in Internet Explorer 8 crashes, Windows 7 will terminate it, but all the other tabs are still working (like in Chrome). After a few seconds, the tab is restored. This feature is actually not that bad.
  • Reactivation from Stand-By is not working, the screen just stays black all the time.

More stuff will follow…

PizzaProfi – create your own pizza

Now that the results are out, I can upload my submission for the Bundeswettbewerb Informatik 2008, the German computing competition.

Download the Pizzaprofi application here!

Download the Pizzaprofi source code here!

This was the task:

Task 1: Pizzavision
Many people visiting a pizza restaurant enjoy to choose the ingredients of their pizza. It would be nice to see a preview of the created pizza on a computer screen. Every guest should be able to choose from 12 given ingredients. Always after adding or removing something, the image of the pizza should be regenerated.
The pizza images should avoid ordering mistakes, be a pleasure for the guest and encourage him to add more ingredients.

1. Realize such a system
2. Document the ordering procedure with the shown pizza images.

I created an application that has got an ingredients list on the right side and shows you a randomly generated image on the left. All the algorithms are based on an initial number that can be set in the bottom left hand corner. Thus you can regenerate every image exactly the way it was if you remember the number.

The application can also save the generated image and shows you the price of your current pizza configuration. It’s all in German since the competition is a German one.

You can find the complete documentation and explanation here.

Install Windows 7 on any netbook (Asus Eee PC 900)!

This tutorial will show you how to install Microsoft Windows 7 on the Asus Eee PC 900. Except for the last part (configuring boot devices), this tutorial works for every other netbook out there! Just follow the instructions to create your bootable Windows 7 USB thumbdrive, plug it into your netbook and start!

If the image doesn’t satisfy you, see this video proof:

(In this video, I am running Build 6956, although the startup animation is not the correct one. I guess that the graphics card is not good enough to display the 3D animation. This way of installing Windows 7 will work with any version of Windows 7)

Make Windows XP and Office 2007 genuine!

I wrote a tutorial earlier how to bypass the Windows Geniune Advantage (WGA) check for installing Windows Media Player 11 or Internet Explorer 8 by using a registry hack, but this will go even further and make your copy of Windows look completely genuine so you can even do Windows Updates and use the Office Online templates.

All the software is from CT Forums, so please refer to them if you have questions or there are any legal issues.

You may only use this tutorial and the software provided if you own an original version of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office! Check the legal situation in your country before following this tutorial! I am not responsible for any crimes commited with the information provided!

Download WGA Patcher 2.0

Download Office 2007 Patcher 1.6

Please scroll down for the Office 2007 tutorial. If there are any questions, post them as comments please!

Make Windows genuine for Windows Update

First of all, download the WGA Patcher from the link above or from CT Forums and extract all the files to your hard disk.

Generate Windows XP key

Then open Windows XP Keygen.exe, select “Windows XP Pro VLK” in the Product Family dropdown menu, and click “generate”. In the box below, it will generate a Windows XP license key. Don’t close the program, you will need it later!

Play StarCraft multiplayer (LAN) on Windows XP/Vista

Here is how you can run StarCraft, the most sold real-time strategy game ever, on modern computers with Windows XP or Vista. Originally, the game is designed to run on Windows 95 or 98, but with a few tricks, it will also work on new machines!

In contrast to modern games, StarCraft uses the IPX protocol instead of the TCP/IP protocol. Luckily even Windows XP and Vista include this protocol, but they don’t have it installed usually.

First of all, go to your Control Panel -> Network and Internet connections -> Network Connections, right-click on your LAN connection and select properties.

How to decompile/reverse engineer/disassemble any XNA Game!

Today I’ll show you how to get the source code of any game that’s made using C#, the .NET Framework and Microsoft’s XNA Framework. Basically, this will also work for all .NET Applications, but for XNA Games it’s more difficult, so I will explain it for XNA here.
I hope you understand and like it, if there are any issues, please comment to help me improving this tutorial!

Warning: You may violate copyright laws in your country if you try to obtain property (in this case source code) that you don’t own! Check your legal situation before following this tutorial! I won’t be responsible for any criminal offence done with the information provided!

Step-by-step tutorial to disassemble the game

Things you need

  • An XNA-based game
  • .NET Reflector
  • Visual Studio 2005/2008
  • XNA Game Studio 1.0/2.0/3.0

Decompiling the binary file

First of all, you need a really great tool called .NET Reflector. You can download it from the official website or from my server. The .NET Reflector can look inside .NET binaries (.exe and .dll files) and disassemble the code to any of these programming languages: IL, C#, Visual Basic, Delphi, MC++ and Chrome.

Drivewatcher – useful tool to analyze hard disk operations

Ever wanted to find out where MSN stores its contact database? Or Firefox saves your Cookies? Then Drivewatcher is the right tool for you!

It analyzes every change that’s made to any of your hard disk drives. All partitions are shown as tabs, and every tab shows the time, the file path and the operation done on the particular file.
Even if you don’t want to find out what an application is doing, you can just try it to see how many file operations are done by system processes you’ve never heard of. Just give it a try!

Drivewatcher 1.0 Download

Please comment if you like it or wish more features!

Microsoft turns a bus into a mobile office

How’s this for a double-edged sword? Microsoft is providing free bus transportation to work for some of its employees in China. Hey, that’s great! It saves money as well as the environment. The downside? The bus is full of workstations, meaning everyone it picks up gets to work that much longer every day. But surely, the working time in the bus won’t be counted as part of your eight-hour working day. So do you really want to work more just for free transportation instead of listening to your iPod, talking to your colleagues, …? And what’s about the motion sickness? Would you be able to read a book while the bus is shaking over Chinese roads? The same with looking a computer screen.
